Caden was up before the sun rose. The sound of flapping wings had woken him. Not that he’d been in a deep sleep, anyway. His dreams had been dark and kept him from being able to rest. He stretched his muscles and trekked across the camp, heading to Lireth’s usual spot.

It surprised him to see that she had returned with more than a few dragons. There were a dozen of the creatures, most of them as ebon scaled as she was, but there were four exceptions. Two green dragons, a blue, and a white. The green ones were thick and bulky, but they weren’t as large as Lireth. The white one was the smallest of them all but looked just as fierce. Of them all, the blue one caught his attention the most.

It was the largest of the newcomers, dwarfing the green duo. Many of the scales on its face were chipped or missing completely, giving the dragon an ominous appearance. Where entire scales were absent, the flesh was scarred and mottled. He tore his gaze away before the beast looked at him.

“I see you were successful,” Caden said to Lireth.

Their numbers are less than I wanted, but I will take them. More will come when they see the devastation I unleash upon Lord D’Lance’s domain.

“They will certainly bolster our forces, but he will know we are coming long before we reach the castle. A dozen dragons in the sky would be hard to miss.”

That is why we will take down his scouts.

“The draman can manage that, but they’ll need to find a way to sneak into the city. The place has guards everywhere. We can send them ahead of us, but their task will be a challenge.”

I am speaking of the dragons that patrol the skies. There are only a few. With them out of the way, he will be defenseless against our onslaught.

“You are as clever as you are awe-inspiring,” Caden complimented.

You speak the obvious. Inform Bast that he is in command until you return.

“Return from where?”

You and I will be the ones to take down the scouts.

“What good will I do? I can’t injure a dragon, nor could I attack one from the ground even if I could.”

You will ride on my back. Lireth snorted derisively. Tendrils of smoke drifted out of her nostrils. Use your brain before I find another use for you.

Caden bowed to her. “My apologies,” he said. “I didn’t realize you were going to grant me the honor.”

It is a privilege I give you for being joined to me.

“Is that the same as being bonded? Mina mentioned being bonded to Gedrith. Do you and I share the same connection?”

Lireth regarded him in silence for a moment.

Yes, but our bond is different. When I feel you are ready, I will teach you about it.

“I look forward to proving myself worthy in your eyes.”

Caden returned to the camp and found Bast eating breakfast. He was sitting beside the glowing embers of a fire from the night before.
